Famous Scottish retailer HANON joins forces with German giant adidas to bring us a ZX 420 « Luck Of The Sea » inspired by the North Sea coastal environment. The high-performance running shoe, released in 1988, honors the lineage of generations of Scottish North Sea sailors with their habits, rituals and superstitions that are supposed to bring them luck and good fortune.
This traditional “folklore” was an integral part of the daily life of Scottish sailors’ families. It was followed by all and passed on to the following generations to protect them from any problems or accidents at sea, which cost the lives of a large number of sailors every year. Some of these rituals or superstitions can be found on the sneaker presented today.
To represent the atmosphere of the North Sea, the shoe is adorned with shades of blue and grey. 2 shades of blue to truly reflect the sea and 2 shades of grey reminiscent of the clouds above the water.
The shoe consists of a mesh upper with premium quality suede overlays. The toe box appears in light grey, the side panels in dark grey and the tongue is dressed in luminous blue. The overlays on the front of the foot are light grey and at the heel they are dark grey. The laceguard connects these two parts, adorning itself in light grey for the lower eyelets and dark grey for the upper eyelets. The final upper eyelet is the only one made of metal. It is embellished with a chain and a « lucky charm » : a nickel-plated coin slipped into a pocket, as is the tradition to keep out trouble. Another nod to these superstitions, inside the greenish-blue tongues, we discover a label with the ritual that is applied before boarding a boat « right foot first » and « left foot second ». Silver accents such as the Hanon flame logo on the right heel tab and the Trefoil on the left, as well as co-branded tongue labels and an edging on the heel, complete the tribute to the lucky coin. Dark grey laces, a greenish-blue inner lining and the three luminous blue adidas side stripes with jagged contours complete the look. The whole look is based on a midsole in both shades of blue, combined with a black outsole.
