Like the world famous Japanese artist Hajime Sorayama (article available HERE), the Italian streetwear brand GCDS (God Can’t Destroy Streetwear) has revisited the iconic MIZUNO Wave Prophecy running shoe. This collaboration pays homage to the purity of shapes and colors, inspiring by Japan.
Released in 1997, the Wave Prophecy silhouette from the famous Japanese shoe manufacturer Mizuno combines technological success with revolutionary design. The two Milanese brothers who founded GCDS, Guiliano and Giordano Calza, chose this model for its history and performance, but also for its beauty and the harmony of its lines that create a perfect balance.
Guiliano explains, « I received my very first pair of Mizuno’s during a trip to Japan when I was studying in China. It was love at first sight. The cherry tree represents the flower season in Japan and that’s when the shoe will be released ».
For the revamped design of this pair, Mizuno’s technical teams worked with GCDS to create an innovative upper in monogrammed white jacquard mesh. This base is complemented by matching leather and synthetic thermo-bonded overlays. Guiliano also wanted to use GCDS’s signature color : fuchsia, while giving it a metallic look reminiscent of the aesthetic and futuristic charm of Japan. It’s found in the sole with transparent air pockets and the heel, which combines suede and reflective Pebax thermoplastic elastomers. GCDS’s signature aesthetic of bright, playful and ironic color graphics appears in the tongue branding and on the two-tone fuchsia and apple green laces that appear to be coiled. The look is finalized by the GCDS logo on the side heel and the laser engraved serial number on the forefoot.
This pair comes in a special metallic fuchsia box, featuring the white co-branding and a happy cherry illustration that ensures the reference to Japan in the GCDS signature style.
The GCDS x Mizuno Wave Prophecy « Cherry » will be released as a limited edition on April 15, 2021 at noon via the GCDS store and online here : https://gcds.it/products/gcds-cherry-mizuno, priced at 317$ and sizesrun from US 5 to US 11.
