Le 14 septembre 2023, le légendaire groupe de rap hardcore new-yorkais ONYX a performé dans la salle du REX de Toulouse. Avant cet excellent concert imprégné de la vibe hip hop des 90’s (report disponible ICI), nous avons eu la chance de pouvoir échanger quelques minutes avec Fredro Starr et Sticky Fingaz.
Media Bisso (MB) : Hello, merci de nous recevoir. Vous êtes un groupe iconique qui a marqué l’histoire du rap, mais pour vous, quel est le meilleur groupe ou meilleur artiste de tous les temps ?
Fredro Starr : De tous les temps wow ! Pour moi, c’est MARVIN GAYE ! Mais il y en a plein. BOB MARLEY aussi.
Sticky Fingaz : MICHAEL JACKSON !
MB : Et parmi la scène musicale actuelle, il y a des artistes que vous appréciez particulièrement ? Que pensez-vous de la nouvelle génération rap ?
Fredro Starr : Pour les nouveaux gars, j’apprécie THE WEEKEND. Le hip hop d’aujourd’hui est vraiment différent. Nous, on préfère le vrai hip hop, le style Boom Bap, Slick Rick, RUN DMC tu vois.
Sticky Fingaz : Les 90’s !!
Fredro Starr : Ouais les 90’s mais le rap des années 80 aussi ! Le hip hop des années 80 et 90, c’est ça qu’on aime !
MB : D’ailleurs le hip hop fête ses 50 ans cette année, que pensez-vous des célébrations ?
Fredro Starr : C’est cool…
MB : Dans le Queens, d’où vous venez, il y a des events d’organisés ?
Fredro Starr : Il y a plein de trucs organisés. Tu sais c’est les 50 ans du hip hop et beaucoup de choses sont organisées. Des personnes, dont certaines n’ont rien à voir avec le hip hop, pensent que c’est un super moyen pour pouvoir se faire de l’argent, et quelque part c’est cool.
MB : Aujourd’hui vous n’êtes pas à New York mais en France, ici à Toulouse. Que pensez-vous de ce pays et connaissez-vous le rap français ?
Fredro Starr : J’aime la France et j’aime Toulouse. Le climat est bon ici, avec le soleil et le ciel bleu ! J’aime le rap français aussi. NTM, Joey Starr.
Sticky Fingaz : On vient de faire une collaboration avec un groupe de rap français d’ailleurs !
Fredro Starr : C’est vrai ! Avec le groupe l’uZine (sur le morceau ‘On va les pendre’ sorti en mai 2023). On est connecté avec des rappeurs français.
MB : Donc vous allez revenir en France rapidement ?
Fredro Starr : Cette année non, mais l’année prochaine, en 2024, on reviendra. On ne peut pas donner plus de détails pour l’instant.
MB : Cool, on sera là aussi !
Fredro Starr : Il faut, ça va être mortel !
ONYX est une légende du rap hardcore des 90’s. Avec le son ‘Slam’ sorti en 1993, le groupe a connu un grand succès inattendu. Fredro Starr : Of all time, wow! For me, it’s MARVIN GAYE ! But there are a lot. BOB MARLEY too.

MB : And among the current music scene, are there any artists you particularly appreciate ? What do you think of the new rap generation ?
Fredro Starr : For the new guys, I like THE WEEKEND. Today’s hip hop is really different. We prefer real hip hop sh*t, Boom Bap style, Slick Rick, RUN DMC style, you know.
Sticky Fingaz : The 90’s !!
Fredro Starr : Yeah the 90’s but 80’s rap too ! Hip hop from the 80s and 90s, that’s what we love !
MB : Besides, hip hop is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, what do you think of the celebrations ?
Fredro Starr : It’s cool…
MB : In Queens, where you come from, are there organized events?
Fredro Starr : There’s lots of organized stuff. You know it’s 50 years of hip hop and and a lot of things are being organized. Some people think it’s a great way to make money, and in a way that’s cool.
MB : Today you are not in New York but in France, here in Toulouse. What do you think of this country and do you know French rap ?
Fredro Starr : I love France and I love Toulouse. The climate is good here, with sunshine and blue skies ! I like French rap too. NTM, Joey Starr.
Sticky Fingaz : We just did a collaboration with a French rap group !
Fredro Starr : That’s right ! With the group uZine (on the song ‘On va les pendre’ released in May 2023). We are connected with French rappers.
MB : So you are going to return to France quickly ?
Fredro Starr : This year no, but next year, in 2024, we will come back. We cannot provide further details at this time.
