As part of its 40th anniversary celebration, G-SHOCK is offering special edition watches and eye-catching collabs. After unveiling the all-metal GMW-B5000TCC earlier this year, the legendary Japanese brand presents a trio of new exclusive versions of the very first G-SHOCK watch.
This capsule consists of a DW-5040PG almost identical to the original 1983 model, and a duo of GMW-B5000PS and GMW-B5000PG made of stainless steel with a novel recrystallization treatment.
The DW-5040PG has all the characteristics of the OG model while being adorned with the modern know-how of Casio. This black watch has benefited from the Japanese specialist’s deep hardening process on the case back, the strap buckle and other metal components of the watch. This technique creates a hard layer by infusing carbon into the surface of the steel. As a result, the steel is 3 times harder and more resistant than conventional stainless steel.
The case and bracelet of this watch are made of biosourced resin. To pay homage to the origins of the model, the gold dial is adorned with “PROJECT TEAM Tough” at the bottom left, which is the name of the team that worked on this concept and gave birth to Casio’s G-SHOCK sub-brand.
The GMW-B5000PS and GMW-B5000PG models have opted for reinforcement, stainless steel recrystallization and deep layer hardening techniques to make them even stronger and more stylish. In fact, with this heat treatment and recrystallization technique, crystalline patterns are created that give the appearance of fine metal fragments scattered on the surface in a matte texture.
To make the coloring even bolder, these watches have had additional applications of ion plating, titanium carbide (TiC) and other special coatings.
The GMW-B5000PS appears silver with a black dial and the GMW-B5000PG is gold with a traditional grey dial. Both feature tribute details such as the “40th Anniversary” logo engraved on the case back, “SINCE 1883” on the bottom left of the dial, the 4 stars symbolizing the 4 decades on the strap loop and the star on the ‘Mode’ button located on the bottom left corner of the case.
The trio of G-SHOCK ’40th anniversary’ models will be released very soon, during this month of May 2023, in G-SHOCK stores, at selected retailers and online at gshock.casio.com. Prices are set at 299€ for the DW-5040PG and 869€ for each GMW-B5000P.
