Nike SB Dunk Low « Street Hawker »

At the beginning of December 2020, a Nike SB Dunk Low had been teased under the title « CNY » (article available HERE) and appears today named « Street Hawker ». Designed by the artist Jason Deng, this mismatched pair is indeed a tribute to China. It’s inspired by the Chinese culinary culture and pays homage to 6 typical dishes from 6 Chinese cities.

This sneaker is dressed in a rich and varied color palette. It’s composed of an upper combining various materials and prints to represent the dishes or the food they are made of. We also discover several small nods to the Chinese food traditions and at its utensils.

For the left shoe, we can cite a few examples : the beige color corresponds to the flour, the suede of the toe box imitates the color and texture of « Douzhi » (the Beijing green bean soup). On the sides, the embossed suede illustrates the grated pieces of pita bread dipped in sheep soup, a traditional Xi’an dish. Sheep soup is honored with watercolor patterns in the overlays. Finally, the Swoosh represents the chopsticks because of its wood grain texture and a copper dime embroidered on the side heel alludes to Yangchun noodles.

For the right shoe, the artist was interested in the flavors of the dishes, ranging from sweet to spicy, with warm colors. The mudguard has prints depicting splashes of boiling hot pepper oil and the metallic colored toe box corresponds to the Chengdu hotpots, the container in which the dishes are cooked. The ostrich leather side panels show the crispy roasted goose skin typical of Guangzhou (a city in southern China where Jason Deng is from). The flame and lychee wood used to prepare this dish appear in a watercolor pattern on the laceguard and the silver side Swoosh corresponds to the metal hook on which the goose is hung.

Other elements such as the insoles, the soles, the tongue brandings and the 4 colors of laces also tell a story. In all, there are 22 things to know about this upcoming Nike SB Dunk, all listed here

The Nike SB Dunk Low « Street Hawker » is announced for January 13, 2021, in selected skateshops and on Be ready !
