The legendary Californian brand VANS regularly teams up with sportsmen, streetwear labels and even fashion houses to create new looks for its cult silhouettes (several articles available on this site). For the first time in 20 years, Vans invited a woman, Lizzie Armanto, to design its first signature shoe.
The American-Finnish professional skateboarder, Lizzie Armanto, is a skateboarding pioneer. She is an inspiration and role model for young girls who are getting into this sport historically associated with boys. With Vans, Lizzie Armanto has already brought her forward-thinking « Girl Power » touch to a legendary silhouette, the Old Skool. Now, the partnership takes it to the next level, as Lizzie becomes the 1st woman to get a signature Vans sneaker.
About the project, the skater commented, « I really enjoyed the process of creating a shoe from scratch. I felt compelled to create a simple, functional, foot-friendly shoe with a bit of soul and pride in what we were able to accomplish. »
« The Lizzie » is a high top model with a fitted leather upper. The 1st version unveiled features an off-white base with subtle yellow branding details. To enhance the comfort and feel of the board, Lizzie Armanto made other significant changes : reinforced materials in the Duracap toe box and side band, as well as the addition of EcoCush foam under the foot. The pair features a micro-waffle tread coupled with a Sick-Sick rubber sole that provides added traction. To complete the design, the skater’s initials are emblazoned on the tongue and her first and last name appear on the heel flaps when raised. Botanical motifs adorn the inside of the shoe to symbolize Lizzie Armanto’s attraction to flowers.
In addition to this Vans « Lizzie » silhouette, textile pieces complete the collection. We discover a white and orange striped t-shirt, a black croc-top tank top, brown canvas pants and a matching sleeveless zip jacket, as well as a bucket hat and white socks.
The Lizzie Armanto x Vans « The Lizzie » and apparel collection will be released on March 10, 2022 at select skateshops and on vans.com.
