Last December, talented Chicago designer JOE FRESHGOODS teased a new collaboration with legendary California brand Vault by Vans. Named « Chocolate Valley Resort », this collection is presented in detail today.

Commenting on the collaboration, Joe Freshgoods said : « Chocolate Valley Resort is inspired by my love of travel and research. For this collection, I wanted to create something that aligned with the rich history of Vault by Vans, but from a new angle. Chocolate Valley Resort marries the history of travel and leisure with winter-ready pieces that combine playfulness and functionality. »

« Chocolate Valley Resort » is an ode to travel, visualized through history and community. The collection includes exclusive footwear, apparel and accessories.

The partners enlisted documentary filmmaker Yashaddai Owens and Barrington Darius for the lookbook, which is set in the 1950s and tells the story of a black writer who explores the « Chocolate Valley Resort » (a fictional place) in search of a space to recharge, relax and reconnect. The collection and lookbook pay homage to history and black writers such as James Baldwin and Audre Lorde who traveled abroad to escape racism in America and build their literary careers. « Chocolate Valley Resort » appears as a safe and serene space, encouraging creativity and community at home.

The designer, one of the most beloved of the moment, combined his design prowess, interest in historical references and personal experience of Midwestern winters to come up with the winter pieces for this collaborative collection.

The entire line consists of revamped workwear with modern silhouettes and bold colors, including Joe Freshgoods’ signature ‘pink’, while keeping movement and creativity in mind. The designer explained : « Using shades of pink in all my collections has always been a goal of mine – it was the first color that inspired my style language many years ago. Since the collection is focused on cold weather, I wanted to create a full range of items that would be especially appropriate for Midwestern winters. And to really lean into winter travel, we incorporated a ‘quilted’ pattern into many of the pieces. »

The footwear line includes a Sk8-Hi Reissue Platform VLT LX in two colorways, pink/white and almond/white. It consists of a combination of padded nylon and furry suede uppers, resting on a signature platform sole that ensures a retro design. The Slip-Hiker LX has a low boot look. Available in pink or white, it appears modernized with a padded nylon upper and panels and are equipped with an all-weather MTE outsole for optimal traction. Each pair of shoes will be released with a special key chain.

On the apparel side, the collection is built around revamped Vans pieces that match the sneakers. The ‘Resort Puffer’ is a stylish cream color with extended sleeves. Made from faux mohair, the ‘Chocolate Cardigan’ features coral/almond jacquard stripes, with the collection’s name sewn on the back and the JFG logo embroidered on the sleeve hem. The antique white ‘Cabin Tee’ appears to be a premium quality 100% cotton. The collar is tagless for added comfort. The Resort Uniform Cargo has a modern workwear look with an adjustable waist, a wide cut and 4 cargo pockets. The collection also includes accessories : the Logo Puffer bag in almond color with Joe’s initial ‘J’ in a contrasting cream color, enlarged as a pattern on the sides of the bag. This nylon bag has a top zipper closure and an interior pocket to be both stylish and functional. The Resort Mask can be worn as a beanie or hood. Featuring a pink/cream stripe pattern and the JFG x VANS co-branding on the inner label, this headwear is the perfect extra piece for mountain excursions or just daily commutes during the cold season.

The Joe Freshgoods x Vault by Vans « Chocolate Valley Resort » collection will be released exclusively on January 21, 2023 online at the fashion designer’s website,, followed by a global launch at and at select retailers.

It should be noted that the cream colorway of the Slip-Hiker LX will only be available at ‘Every Now & Then’ stores and on the website of the Chicago’s designer. Don’t sleep !
