Collection Super7 x Saucony Jazz Original « Universal Monsters »

Renowned pop culture design house SUPER7 and equipment manufacturer SAUCONY unveil a new « Monsters » themed collaboration from production company UNIVERSAL PICTURES. The collection named « Universal Monsters » features 4 iconic characters on the classic Jazz Original silhouette.

San Francisco design house SUPER7 was founded just 20 years ago, in 2001. Led by designer Brian Flynn, the company draws inspiration from pop culture to create collectibles, toys and lifestyle apparel. Brian Flynn harnesses the graphics, aesthetics and energy of his passion for science fiction, giant monsters, comic books, punk rock music, skateboarding, robots and rebellion to create unique and innovative products.

The famous retro sneaker comes in 4 special colorways representing respectively : the Creature from the Black Lagoon, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein and the Mummy.

All iterations have in common their specific name on the tongue label, co-branding on the insole and the inscription « Monster » in Japanese on the heel. They are delivered in special boxes designed for the occasion.

The Creature from the Black Lagoon is a 1954 horror film featuring an aquatic monster from the depths of the Amazon jungle. It’s green in color and has a large red mouth. To match the monster’s aesthetic, the shoe features a green nylon base, complemented by overlays of dark green/grey textured material featuring a scale pattern. In a nod to the bright color of the mouth, the laces and heel logo are adorned in bright red. The whole is based on a white midsole and a semi-translucent swamp green outsole.

Frankenstein is a 1931 horror film loosely based on Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel. Frankenstein’s monster was created by the scientist whose name it bears, using an assembly of corpses brought back to life. To represent this assemblage, the sneaker combines nylon, nubuck and suede materials in shades of green, complemented by leather inserts, as well as a mudguard and heel reinforcement in dark grey. Imitation stitching between the different elements of the upper finalizes the tribute to the misunderstood monster. The whole is based on a grey midsole and a semi-translucent green outsole matching the perforated toe box.

The Bride of Frankenstein is an American film released in 1935 and following Frankenstein. Doctor Pretorius forces his colleague Frankenstein to create a woman for the monster. The reinvented Jazz Original is adorned with his aesthetic features. It consists of a light green nylon upper with light grey suede and purplish grey nubuck and leather overlays. We find the same imitation stitching patterns as on the « Frankenstein » pair. The silver-grey wavy pattern embroidered on the heel matches the details of the bride’s hairstyle and affirms the tribute. To add an extra layer of creepiness, the laces and white midsole are adorned with a « Glow-In-The-Dark » option. A dark grey outsole adds the finishing touch.

The Mummy is also a classic Hollywood horror film from the 1930s. Released precisely in 1932, it relies on the legends that reign around Egyptian mummies to put forward a terrifying scenario. Asleep for thousands of years, the mummy awakens and takes shape on this exclusive Jazz Original. It takes the design of the strips that surround the mummified person. It’s revealed on the white nylon base. Grey overlays, a very dark grey tongue and red elements, such as the laces and heel tab, complete the look. A white midsole combined with a grey outsole provides the harmonious finishing touch.
