Collection KENZO « REAL-TO-WEAR » by NIGO

NIGO, the founder of the streetwear label BAPE, has become the new artistic director of KENZO. He presented his first collection for the fashion house on Sunday, January 23, 2022, during the last day of Paris Fashion Week .

It’s under the eyes of his friends Kanye West, Pharrell Williams and Pusha T, to name but a few, that NIGO unveiled his first pieces imagined and made for KENZO. He succeeds Portuguese designer Felipe Olivera Baptista who was fired after offering pieces that were not as successful as expected.

Nigo has always appreciated the KENZO brand and the designs of its creator Mr. Takada. He has a deep knowledge of the brand’s iconic wardrobe but also of less popular archival pieces. He was able to draw inspiration from these different garments for his first collection for KENZO.

In the note of intent of the show, the fashion house said : « Nigo and Kenzo Takada share the same cultural language of synthesis between Japanese and Western clothing traditions and above all the same attitude towards fashion: everything you see on a catwalk must be worn in real life. »

Sidney Toledano, the CEO of LVMH Fashion Group who chose Nigo to lead the house, also spoke out : « I was so impressed with his knowledge of Kenzo Takada. He has an archive that even we don’t have. »

This « non-gendered » collection is intended to be completely wearable and the bet is successful. We find the iconic poppy print of KENZO declined on several pieces.

Combining Japanese finesse with American and British influences, the collection includes floral denim ensembles, Prince of Wales suits, aviator jackets, bombers, plaid ponchos, flashy sweaters, striped overalls and shirts, skirts and dresses adorned with large red poppies and silk vests. Accessories are also presented, such as ties, bags, scarves, beanies, but also reworked Parisian berets decorated with pines.

NIGO has cleverly played on all the classic themes of the house of KENZO to design this first mixed collection KENZO « REAL-TO-WEAR ». He was able to breathe new life into the fashion house by blending Japanese artistic sensibilities, elegant Parisian style and casual modern influences.
