While the sneaker trend has been in full swing for many years, one major North American sports brand is missing : AVIA. According to vintage shoe enthusiast @velour or @velourlab on Instagram, the return of iconic models 880 and 830 is near.
AVIA was founded in Oregon in 1979 by Jerry Stubblefield. Although absent for 20 years on the sneaker scene, this famous sportswear label has had a pervasive influence until today. The father-son duo that led AVIA before its acquisition by Reebok, was the first to revolutionize the world of sneakers by developing a new reactive and hyper comfortable sole « cantilever » reminiscent of a trampoline effect. AVIA sued NIKE in 1991 for being a little too inspired by its concave sole to create its own. AVIA won the case. Afterwards, many other sneaker brands were inspired by the idea of AVIA’s founders for their personal technology.
In the next few months, this cult brand will make its big comeback in the sneaker world and reintroduce the legendary 880 and 830 models, already worn before by Scottie Pippen and Clyde Drexler.
AVIA’s return seems to have been motivated by vintage sneaker lovers, including @velour. Details are provided by Instagram account user @aviaisback. The 80s/90s bball silhouettes that made their mark on their generation will keep their shape and quality materials in 2023. The goal is to bring back the most iconic designs in their OG form and celebrate the historic craft.
Made with leather, the 880 resurfaces in a White/Grey/Black colorway. It features perforations on the toe box for breathability and a grey ankle strap with red AVIA branding which ensures the support. The model number is also embossed in red on the back of the heel. « For The Inside » tagging on the tongue and a white, grey and red tri-color outsole complete the design.
The 830 has a look that could be described as lifestyle today. It consists of a white leather upper with matching overlays and a forest green padded collar. The AVIA branding, present on the quarter panel and heel counter, is also dressed in this shade of green. The look is completed by the model number, 830, stamped under the ankle and heel clip in forest green. The whole is based on a white midsole and a green notched outsole that bring the final harmonious touch.
The AVIA 880 & 830 are scheduled to return in their OG colorway in January 2023 at select retailers and online at avia.com. For the latest official details, stay tuned !
