Air Jordan 5 Low « Doernbecher »

Jordan Brand continues to support sick children through its « Doernbecher Freestyle » program. Since 2003, the sportswear giant has been inviting little patient-designers from the Doernbecher Hospital in Portlant to express their creativity on the brand’s silhouettes. Michael Wilson, a teenager suffering from Krabbe’s disease (a severe neurological disorder) chose to reimagine the famous Air Jordan 5 Low.

For almost 20 years, this partnership between Jordan Brand and Doernbecher has raised over $30 million for the hospital by auctioning off pairs designed by former patients. For 2022, a total of 7 reinterpretations will be offered in limited edition.

The shoe sports a bold look with a bright color combination.

As for the inspiration, details were not released, but we understand that Michael Wilson must greatly appreciate « mac and cheese ». The toe box and blue collar are adorned with macaroni motifs and the lace dubrae takes on the shape and color of this variety of pasta with the touch of dripping cheese. The overlays are presented in different colors : red on the front of the foot, orange on the middle and green on the heel. The green color, in a darker shade, dresses the majority of the eyelets and the red hue stands out on the iconic shark teeth. The netting inserts are adorned with semi-translucent white and the inner lining features a red and blue graphic pattern. To complete the look, « TAKE FLIGHT » adorns the side heel and the young designer’s initials are coupled with the jumpman on the back of the foot. The whole is based on a vintage yellowed midsole and an icy outsole.

The Air Jordan 5 Low « Doernbecher » will be released in the coming weeks at select retailers and on nike.com. The rest of the « Doernbecher Freestyle » 2022 collection will be virtually unveiled on February 25, 2022. Stay tuned !
