Adidas Superstar 82 « Sashiko »

Over the years, the Japanese art of Sashiko has inspired many sneaker brands to reimagine iconic silhouettes from their catalogs (various articles available on this site). adidas is among those who wish to continue to honor this traditional form of embroidery, this time through an exclusive Superstar 82.

The iconic German brand has already presented us with Sashiko-influenced remodeled silhouettes, including the recent Ultra BOOST 21 and a little longer ago, the END. x adidas Superstar « Alternative Luxury » (article available HERE).

Sashiko literally means « to prick/stick small ». The first traces of this art date back to the year 752, but its development is much later, in the 1600s. It’s an ancient Japanese embroidery technique initially used to reinforce or repair worn clothing. Later, it acquired an artistic value and an aesthetic function. Traditionally, Sashiko is made of white thread on an indigo blue fabric.

This special adidas Superstar is dressed in 2 main materials. First, beige vachetta leather unifying the tongue and toe box with blue stitching. Second, indigo canvas with the famous traditional white « Sashiko » embroidery. The latter material appears as overlays on the sides of the shoe and heel, eyelets, and on the panels where the iconic embroidered 3-Stripes sit. To complete the look, the heel tab with Trefoil logo and inner lining are dressed in indigo blue leather, the insole is trimmed in beige leather and the tongue features a faded adidas logo. An off-white sole with indigo stitching completes the design.

The pair comes with a beige leather hangtag and 4 sets of laces : white, red, black and sky blue.

The adidas Superstar 82 « Sashiko » will be released soon, likely during the 2021 holiday season, at select retailers and on adidas.com, priced at 110$. Stay tuned for more information !
