This 3-pair capsule pays tribute to 3 key mondial soccer moments marked with a red card.
The silhouettes of the AS 250, Gazelle and Marathon TR have been reimagined to represent a memorable world cup match each, with the teams’ colors and the date of the match engraved inside. As an added common touch, these pairs feature red insoles.
The AS 250 evokes the ¼ final match between England and Portugal in the 2006 World Cup, with Wayne Rooney’s red card and Portugal’s victory.
It consists of a white grained leather upper, benefiting from a beige suede toe overlay and 3 mismatched Stripes inspired by each nation’s flag colors. An embossed white leather tongue, black heel tab and traditional gumsole finish the look elegantly.
The Gazelle refers to one of the many times England faced Argentina, on June 30, 1998 in the 1/8 final of the World Cup in France. Superstar David Beckham was red-carded in the 47th minute and England lost narrowly on penalties.
The shoe features a navy blue suede upper with red/white stripes on one side and blue/white on the other to pay tribute to the 2 teams. The adidas branding is applied in gold leaf on the side heel and the sole is adorned with embossed stars and a red patch that nods to the competition and the dreaded card.
The Marathon TR pays homage to the famous and controversial match between France and Italy in the 2006 World Cup final. The legend Zinedine ‘Zizou’ Zidane opened the score in the 7th minute and Marco Materazzi equalized ten minutes later. During the extra time, Zizou left the match after a ‘headbutt’ sanctioned by a red card. France loses in the penalty shoot-out.
The shoe is adorned with a revisited upper : the usual mesh has been replaced by high quality suede in royal blue. The overlays, tongue, eyelets and laces appear matching the upper. Nationally branded 3 Stripes and a grippy rubber spike sole add the finishing touch.
