[:fr]Après nous avoir présenté sa collection Fall/Winter 2022, la marque américaine COLUMBIA dévoile une collaboration exceptionnelle avec Intuitive Machines (IM), le 1er fournisseur de services et de technologie spatiale, sur la Lune.
La nouvelle technologie réfléchissante Omni-Heat Infinity de COLUMBIA Sportswear sera intégrée à la prochaine mission d’Intuitive Machines pour la NASA.
Fondée en 2013 par Stephen Altemus, Kam Ghaffarian et Tim Crain, Intuitive Machines est une société américaine basée à Houston, au Texas. Cette entreprise complète son programme lunaire qui fournira un accès à la surface lunaire, une livraison en orbite lunaire et des communications à distance lunaire. La NASA a sélectionné le programme Lunar Payload Delivery Services (LPDS) de Intuitive Machines pour 3 missions lunaires qui enverront le premier vaisseau spatial américain à la surface de la Lune depuis le programme Apollo, ainsi que le premier vaisseau spatial à atteindre le pôle sud lunaire.
La 1ère mission lunaire aura lieu dans quelques mois, en 2023, avec pour but l’échantillonnage et l’analyse de la glace située à a la surface de la Lune. INTUITIVE MACHINES va construire et lancer l’atterrisseur lunaire Nova-C de la NASA. En tant que partenaire scientifique d’IM, COLUMBIA Sportswear fournit sa technologie thermo-réfléchissante Omni-Heat Infinity pour aider à protéger et isoler l’atterrisseur lunaire Nova-C des températures glaciales de l’espace qui peuvent chuter jusqu’à -150° la nuit.
C’est ce phénomène météorologique qui avait posé problèmes aux scientifiques de la NASA dans les années 60 lors de la préparation de l’historique mission Apollo 11. Ils avaient réussi à mettre au point un matériau isolant hautement réfléchissant et ainsi créer la couverture spatiale. Près de 50 ans plus tard, COLUMBIA Sportswear a réfléchi pour résoudre un problème récurrent de l’industrie de l’outdoor : concevoir des articles toujours plus chauds tout en assurant une respirabilité maximale. La réflexion de la team COLUMBIA l’a conduit à adapter la technologie de la couverture spatiale de la NASA pour élaborer la technologie OMNI-HEAT REFLECTIVE, une doublure métallique légère qui reflète la chaleur corporelle et permet simultanément au tissu de respirer.
Lors de la collection FW 2021, COLUMBIA a présenté la version suivante améliorée : la Omni-Heat™ Infinity. Elle est basée sur une « matrice » de points dorés (et non d’aluminium), plus grands, afin de fournir une isolation thermique 40% plus importante que la version précédente et une sensation de chaleur immédiate, tout en maintenant des niveaux tout aussi élevés de perméabilité à l’air et à l’humidité.
En équipant l’atterrisseur lunaire Nova-C de INTUITIVE MACHINES de la technologie Omni-Heat Infinity, COLUMBIA fait un grand pas dans l’innovation et dans l’effort de collaborations. Les résultats de cette mission aideront le label outdoor américain à améliorer encore davantage ses produits et à en développer de nouveaux toujours plus performants.

COLUMBIA Sportswear’s new Omni-Heat Infinity reflective technology will be incorporated into the next Intuitive Machines mission for NASA.
Founded in 2013 by Stephen Altemus, Kam Ghaffarian and Tim Crain, Intuitive Machines is an American company based in Houston, Texas. The company complements its lunar program, which will provide lunar surface access, lunar orbit delivery and lunar remote communications. NASA has selected Intuitive Machines’ Lunar Payload Delivery Services (LPDS) program for 3 lunar missions that will send the first U.S. spacecraft to the lunar surface since the Apollo program, as well as the first spacecraft to reach the lunar south pole.
The first lunar mission will take place in a few months, in 2023, for a sampling and analysis mission of the ice located on the surface of the Moon. INTUITIVE MACHINES will build and launch NASA’s Nova-C lunar lander. As IM’s science partner, COLUMBIA Sportswear is providing its Omni-Heat Infinity heat-reflective technology to help protect and insulate the Nova-C lunar lander from the frigid temperatures of space, which can drop as low as -150° at night.
It was this meteorological phenomenon that caused problems for NASA scientists in the 1960s during the preparation of the historic Apollo 11 mission. They succeeded in developing a highly reflective insulating material to create the space blanket. Nearly 50 years later, COLUMBIA Sportswear has been thinking about how to solve a recurring problem in the outdoor industry : designing warmer and warmer items with maximum breathability. The COLUMBIA team’s thinking led them to adapt NASA space blanket technology to develop OMNI-HEAT REFLECTIVE, a lightweight metallic lining that reflects body heat and simultaneously allows the fabric to breathe.
At the FW 2021 collection, COLUMBIA introduced the next improved version : the Omni-Heat™ Infinity. It’s based on a « matrix » of larger gold (not aluminum) dots to provide 40% more thermal insulation than the previous version and an immediate feeling of warmth, while maintaining equally high levels of air and moisture permeability.
By equipping INTUITIVE MACHINES’ Nova-C lunar lander with Omni-Heat Infinity technology, COLUMBIA is taking a major step forward in innovation and collaborative efforts. The results of this mission will help the American outdoor label to further improve its products and develop new ones that are even more efficient.
