Parmi les groupes les plus iconiques du rap américain, il y a ONYX. Des MC new-yorkais du Queens au style hardcore qui ont sorti des morceaux mythiques et ont collaboré avec les plus grands noms du game.
Les cousins rappeurs Fredro Starr et Sticky Fingaz se sont produits le 14 septembre 2023 sur la scène du Rex de Toulouse. Organisé par l’association REGARTS, ce concert a été intense, ‘authentique’ et nous a replongé dans l’ambiance des soirées de rap underground des 90’s.
Le show a commencé à 20h avec le DJ set de DJ Gones, un artiste français doté d’une excellente technique et d’une culture musicale très riche. Spécialiste de Jazz, House, Broken Beats, il est aussi incollable en Rap. Pendant plus d’une heure, Gones a joué des incontournables des années 90/2000.
Fredro Starr a surgit sur scène vers 21h10, sur l’instru de ‘Jump Around’ du légendaire groupe Cypress Hill. Quelques minutes plus tard, Sticky Fingaz l’a rejoint et le concert a véritablement été lancé, sans fioritures et avec une énergie folle.
Les membres centraux du groupe ONYX ont juste besoin de l’essentiel pour leurs shows : 2 micros, un dj et des personnes qui partagent leur passion pour le rap hardcore. Le public, plutôt mixte autant en genre qu’en âge, a tout de suite était transporté dans l’ambiance des concerts rap des 90’s.
Fredro Starr et Sticky Fingaz ont tout simplement mis le feu au Rex, accompagnés de leur tour manager @whoiscliftonmorris et DJ Gones. L’authenticité, la puissance et la passion des artistes sur scène ont conquis le public. L’énergie d’ONYX est communicative, tout le monde sautait, chantait, dansait et un pogo a même été lancé dans la fosse. L’ambiance était excellente.
Les membres d’ONYX ont joué leurs plus grands succès, comme ‘Throw Ya Gun’, ‘Bacdafucup’, ‘All We Got Iz Us’, ‘Shut’Em Down‘, ‘Raze It Up’, ‘Street Nigguz’, ‘The Worst’ en feat. avec le Wu-Tang ou encore le légendaire ‘Slam’, tout en interagissant avec la foule et rendant hommage à leurs amis rappeurs disparus. Fredro Starr et Sticky Fingaz ont honoré la mémoire de nombreux artistes comme Jam Master Jay des RUN DMC, Big Pun, Big L, DMX des RUFF RYDERS, Ol’Dirty Bastard du WU TANG, Prodigy de MOBB DEEP ou encore Tupac. Ils ont aussi rappé sur des débuts d’instrus de sons cultes, tels que ‘Simon Says’ de Pharoahe Monch, ‘Step into the World’ de KRS ONE, ‘Shook Ones, Part II’ de MOBB DEPP ou ‘Shimmy Shimmy Ya’ de ODB.
La soirée s’est terminée comme elle a commencé : avec un DJ Set de Gones, comme ‘au bon vieux temps’ des soirées rap d’avant les années 2000.
Pendant plus d’une heure, Fredro Starr et Sticky Fingaz du groupe ONYX ont ‘retourné’ le Rex de Toulouse. Un excellent concert qui nous ramène aux bases du rap et au style purement new-yorkais. The rapper cousins Fredro Starr and Sticky Fingaz performed on September 14, 2023 on the stage of the Rex in Toulouse. Organized by REGARTS, this concert was intense, ‘authentic’ and took us back into the atmosphere of underground rap parties of the 90’s.
The show started at 8 p.m. with the DJ set by DJ Gones, a French artist with excellent technique and a very rich musical culture. A specialist in Jazz, House, Broken Beats, he is also an expert in Rap. For more than an hour, Gones played classics from the 90s/2000s.
Fredro Starr appeared on stage around 9:10 p.m., to the instrumental of ‘Jump Around’ by the legendary group Cypress Hill. A few minutes later, Sticky Fingaz joined him and the concert was truly launched, without frills and with crazy energy.
The core members of the ONYX group just need the essentials for their shows : 2 microphones, a DJ and people who share their passion for hardcore rap. The audience, rather mixed in both gender and age, was immediately transported into the atmosphere of 90’s rap concerts.
Fredro Starr and Sticky Fingaz simply set the Rex on fire, accompanied by their tour manager @whoiscliftonmorris and DJ Gones. The authenticity, power and passion of the artists on stage won over the audience. The energy of ONYX is infectious, everyone was jumping, singing, dancing and a pogo was even thrown into the pit. The atmosphere was excellent.
The members of ONYX performed their biggest hits, like ‘Throw Ya Gun‘, ‘Bacdafucup’, ‘All We Got Iz Us’, ‘Shut ‘Em Down’, ‘Raze It Up’, ‘Street Nigguz’, ‘The Worst’ feat. with Wu-Tang or the legendary ‘Slam’, while interacting with the crowd and paying tribute to their deceased rapper friends. Fredro Starr and Sticky Fingaz have honored the memory of many artists such as Jam Master Jay from RUN DMC, Big Pun, DMX from RUFF RYDERS, Ol’Dirty Bastard from WU TANG, Prodigy from MOBB DEEP and even Tupac. They also rapped on the beginnings of cult instrumentals, such as ‘Simon Says’ by Pharoahe Monch, ‘Step into the World’ by KRS ONE, ‘Shook Ones, Part II’ de MOBB DEPP or ‘Shimmy Shimmy Ya’ by ODB.
